Yes…Tupperware. Now you are asking, “Dan, how come your latest blog update is entitled “TUPPERWARE”? How does this relate to Vehicle Delivering?
Well, glad you asked…lol. Allow me to explain.
Back around the 20th of September, I took a request to move a company vehicle from north GA over to the Greensboro NC region. Not an unfamiliar request and equally familiar drive. I would be picking up the vehicle just off I-75 in north GA, then take a windy curvy, mountain ride east across GA state roads into NC state, eventually meeting up with I-40 near Clyde NC. Jumping on I-40E across NC state, leading me to a few other roads, eventually ending up in Thomasville NC (more on this drive in the final paragraph of this blog entry).
A day before I was to commence this drive, my wife, a Tupperware sales Rep, had lined up a deal with a lady in Murphy NC. It was all set except for the fact her customer thought the shipping costs were too much. This is where I stepped in. I told her I would be driving right through Murphy NC and if they could work it out, I would deliver the purchase. They came up with a drop off spot and for a reduced delivery fee. I would be the courier!
Also on this day, I booked another drive for the same company. Lexington KY to Allentown PA.
After working out the logistics, I basically just tacked the second drive on the back of the first drive.
On the morning of the 23rd, I began my journey, with tupperware in hand, successfully delivered the goods and later that day, finished my one day drive to Thomasville NC. I spent the night in Greensboro at a hotel I had used before, Wingate of Greensboro. Close to many food options and pretty much right off the major interstates that intersect in the area. The following morning, following delivery of the vehicle, I was headed off to the airport to catch a flight to my next driving job, Lexington Kentucky.
The entire drive on the 23rd was filled with me listening in on the latest status of Hurricane Helene. Raging in the Gulf of Mexico, with a destination of the big bend in Perry, Florida (an area I jokingly call the armpit of Florida), I was concerned as a quick turn northward which would carry into my area of Florida, Mexico Beach. Multiple conversations with connections in the Mexico Beach area assured me it was going to be spared this time. Below is a photo of Helene as it makes landfall during the evening of 26 September.
Mexico Beach is directly to the left, on the edge of the outer bands in this picture. We had no structural damage in the area but plenty of beach erosion.
My flight out of Greensboro NC up to Lexington KY on the 24th went well despite storms around the airport in Lexington. After a longer than expected wait, I finally got an Uber and headed to the next vehicle to be relocated. An hour after arrival in town, I was finally on the road to my next destination for delivery, Allentown PA.
Out of Lexington, I took state road 60 to I-64E. My first stop for this trip, no kidding,
Hurricane, WV.
A small town I was familiar with from a past stay, I again chose the WINGATE in town. Super nice place. Super convenient and maybe the best breakfast spread of all the hotels I have ever used. They also have their own in-house bar. I visited the same local Mexican restaurant as well, Whiskey Taco. Also located close by, which came in handy, Walmart Supercenter. I needed some air in one of my tires and those supercenters will give you shots of air for free, if they are not busy. They checked all my tires and it turned out the one that was a little low, had a screw in the tire. I headed out, all the while monitoring the tire. It handled the rest of the trip fine.
Out of Hurricane, next stop: Harrisburg, PA (deja vous).
On the morning of 25 Sep, continuing on 64E, I met up with I-79N. Near Morgantown West Virginia, took I-68E over to Hagerstown MD and jumped on I-81N up to Harrisburg PA (a town I have become familiar with over the last few months!!).
I stayed the night in Harrisburg in a familiar standby hotel (which I may very well be using again later this month), La Quinta Inns & Suites Harrisburg Hershey airport. I did find a new, nice Mexican restaurant to visit, FIESTA MEXICO.
The next morning, the 26th, after a good hotel breakfast, I headed off in the rain to my ultimate destination of Allentown PA. It was a planned short drive of 90 minutes. Once in Allentown, I delivered the vehicle to the company Rep and off to the “huge” Allentown airport. I ended up getting an earlier flight and got back into the metro Atlanta area before the outer bands of Hurricane Helene started affecting the airport.
As I mentioned earlier, my first drive had me up in the Ashville NC area about five days before Hurricane Helene made its way inland and pretty much destroyed everything in its path. The torrential rains wreaked havoc on the Ashville area. Flooding out neighboring towns and wiping out many roads and bridges in the Appalachian Mountain region.
It was and still is a beautiful area.
Not sure when I will be driving on those roads again, but I hope it is soon. I felt bad on my part as I was worried about my town of Mexico Beach never once thinking this region would be hit so hard.
I have a couple more trips booked that will be happening soon. Yes one may involve another hurricane…uugh.
